Cowboy Mounted Shooting is a timed equestrian competition. Riders guide their horse through a set course pattern while engaging designated balloon targets using competition-approved equipment.
Each run is a test of three things at once: horsemanship, speed and accuracy. Riders must keep their horse calm and responsive, navigate the pattern cleanly, and hit their targets — all against the clock.
The sport is governed by the Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association (CMSA), which sets the rules, divisions and strict safety standards used across the country. Every stage is run under official procedures, with briefings and command structure on the ground.
